By use of a previously developed microelectrode technique, the effect of nonuniform stresses on the stress-generated potentials (SGP) in bone were studied to a resolution of 5 micrometers. Comparison was made between uniformly and nonuniformly applied compression of human cortical bone. It was found that the radial electric fields for osteons in a specimen under uniform compression were equivalent, and such specimens possessed no macroscopic SGP; for nonuniform compression, the electric fields of osteons differed, and a macroscopic SGP was measured. The magnitude of the macroscopic SGP thus appears to be dependent upon local stress differences and, hence, on the SGP of local regions.

In order to overcome the problems of the high economic and environmental costs of a traditional ordinary portland cement-based binder, this study used self-combusted coal gangue (SCCG), granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS) and phosphorous slag (PS) to prepare a novel SCCG-GBFS-PS (SGP) ternary alkali-activated binder for solidifying silty soft clay (SC). Firstly, the parameters of the SGP ternary binder were optimized using orthogonal experiments. Then the effects of the SGP ternary binder content (mass ratio of the SGP ternary binder and the SGP-solidified soil), initial water content of SC (mass ratio of SC' water and SC) and types of additives on the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the SGP-solidified soil were analyzed.

This study investigated the tolerance and safety of pasteurized donor human milk (PDHM) given either alone or together with commercially-used supplements in a porcine model of premature infants. A porcine model, mimicking human neonates at 30-32 weeks of gestational age, was used. The 7-day experiment was performed on 20 piglets.

This work reports a systematic study of the evolution of charge transport properties in granular ultra-thin films of palladium of thicknesses varying between 6 nm and 2 nm. While the films with thickness >4 nm exhibit metallic behaviour, that at 3 nm thickness undergoes a metal-insulator transition at 19.5 K.

A theoretical model is developed to predict the fluid shear stress and streaming potential at the surface of osteocytic processes in the lacunar-canalicular porosity of an osteon when the osteon is subject to mechanical loads that are parallel or perpendicular to its axis. The theory developed in Weinbaum et al. (31) for the flow through a proteoglycan matrix in a canaliculus is employed in a poroelastic model for the osteon.

Stress-generated potentials were studied as a function of the conductivity, NaCl concentration, and viscosity of the fluid contained within cortical human and bovine bone. Bone samples were soaked in solutions in which NaCl and sucrose concentrations were systematically varied.
