The objective of an operating room (OR) ultra-clean ventilation system is to eliminate or reduce the quantity of dust particles and colony-forming units per cubic meter of air (CFU/m). To achieve this, ultra-clean goal high air change rates per hour are required to reduce the particle load and number of CFU/m. To determine the air quality in an ultra-clean OR during surgery, in terms of the number and type of microorganism and quantity of dust particles in order to establish a benchmark.

Hydrogen sulfide (HS) is a pervasive gaseous pollutant that emits the characteristic odor of rotten gas, even at low concentrations. It is generated during various industrial processes, including petroleum and natural gas refining, mining operations, wastewater treatment activities, and refuse disposal practices. According to statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), over 70 occupations are exposed to HS, rendering it a key monitoring factor in occupational disease detection.

Ultra-Clean-Air (UCA) operating theatres aim to minimise surgical instrument contamination and wound infection through high flow rates of ultra-clean air, reducing the presence of Microbe Carrying Particles (MCPs). This study investigates the airflow patterns and ventilation characteristics of a UCA operating theatre (OT) under standard ventilation system operating conditions, considering both empty and partially occupied scenarios. Utilising a precise computational model, quasi-Direct Numerical Simulations (qDNS) were conducted to delineate flow velocity profiles, energy spectra, distributions of turbulent kinetic energy, energy dissipation rate, local Kolmogorov scales, and pressure-based coherent structures.
