Although a vaccine for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is now available for pregnant women and the elderly, RSV remains a significant cause of respiratory illness in children globally. Reinfections by the same or different RSV subgroups in children residing in the tropics are currently under-studied. Therefore, we examined the patterns of RSV infection and reinfection in Thai children aged ≤ 5 years with respiratory symptoms from 2016 to 2023.

Microwave Ablation Combined with Flt3L Provokes Tumor-Specific Memory CD8 T Cells-Mediated Antitumor Immunity in Response to PD-1 Blockade.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

December 2024

Department of Oncology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Shandong First Medical University & Shandong Provincial Qianfoshan Hospital, Shandong Provincial Lab for Clinical Immunology Translational Medicine in Universities, Shandong Lung Cancer Institute, 16766 Jingshi Road, Jinan, 250014, P. R. China.

For medically inoperable non-small cell lung cancer, microwave ablation (MWA) represents a super minimally invasive alternative treatment. However, tumor recurrence remains a concern. Here, it is demonstrated that the combination of MWA with Flt3L significantly inhibits tumor recurrence by CD8 central memory T (T)-like cell-dependent antitumor immune responses within the tumor-draining lymph nodes (TdLN).

Aim: The study aimed to elucidate a putative association between severe periodontitis and the incidence of recurrent cardiovascular events in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) within 10 years after their initial hospitalisation.

Methods: A cohort of 1002 stationary patients with angiographically proven CVD was included. They were examined regarding prevalence of severe periodontitis (≥ 30% of the teeth with proximal attachment loss of ≥ 5 mm), probing depth, clinical attachment loss, bleeding on probing, number of missing teeth and oral care habits.

Utility of smart watch in expediting diagnosis of cold drink-triggered atrial fibrillation: a case report.

Int J Emerg Med

October 2024

The Permanente Medical Group, Kaiser Permanente Northern California Division of Research, and the CREST Network, Pleasanton, California, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • A middle-aged man experienced sudden palpitations and shortness of breath while drinking cold juice, prompting him to use his smart watch to detect rapid atrial fibrillation.
  • The man's symptoms resolved by the time he got to the ER, and subsequent evaluations showed only normal sinus rhythm, making the smart watch crucial for diagnosis.
  • This case highlights how smart watch technology can aid in identifying triggers for palpitation episodes, such as cold drinks, and suggests that avoiding these triggers can help reduce the recurrence of atrial fibrillation.

Article Synopsis
  • * Follow-up showed that most positive aPL were transient or low titer, while 10% met criteria for antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), which was linked to a significantly higher risk of recurrent VTE.
  • * The research highlights the need for further studies on managing VTE in children, particularly for those diagnosed with APS, given their higher recurrence risk.
