Infection of Mammary Glands of Small Mammals in Eastern North America by Helminths.

Animals (Basel)

November 2021

West Virginia University Extension Service, West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV 26506, USA.

To determine whether small mammals living in natural settings harbor helminth infections in their mammary glands, we conducted a survey of helminths infecting rodents and soricimorphs in three widespread locations in the eastern United States: states of New York, Tennessee, and Georgia. We examined all the primary organs in all hosts, and identified all helminths. We also excised the complete mammary glands within their subcutaneous fat pads, then stained and mounted each whole mammary gland set for microscopical examination.

Differential use of protease families for invasion by schistosome cercariae.

Biochimie

February 2008

Sandler Center for Basic Research in Parasitic Diseases, California Institute for Quantitative Biomedical Research (QB3), 1700 4th Street, University of California, San Francisco, CA 94158-2550, USA.

Schistosomes are parasitic platyhelminths (flatworms) of birds and mammals. As a parasitic disease of humans, schistosomiasis ranks second only to malaria in global importance. Schistosome larvae (cercariae) must invade and penetrate skin as an initial step to successful infection of the vertebrate host.

Animals routinely encounter environmental stressors and may employ phenotypic plasticity to compensate for the costs of these perturbations. Parasites represent an ecologically important stressor for animals, which may induce host plasticity. The present study examined the effects of a trematode parasite, Schistosomatium douthitti, on deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) physiology, behavior and energetics.

[Study on molecular phylogeny of Schistosoma sinensium based on nuclear ribosomal DNA].

Zhongguo Ji Sheng Chong Xue Yu Ji Sheng Chong Bing Za Zhi

October 2003

Institute of Parasitic Diseases, Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine, WHO Collaborating Centre for Malaria, Schistosomiasis and Filariasis, Laboratory of Parasite and Vector Biology, Ministry of Health, Shanghai, 200025.

Objective: To determine the phylogenetic relationships between Schistosoma sinensium and other Schistosomatid species using DNA sequence data. Two segments of the nuclear rDNA repeat, the second internal spacer (ITS2) and large subunit (LSU/12S) were selected for sequencing.

Methods: Adult worms stored in 100% methanol were washed 3 times with 0.

Cercarial elastase is encoded by a functionally conserved gene family across multiple species of schistosomes.

J Biol Chem

July 2002

University of California San Francisco Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences and the Department of Pathology, University of California, San Francisco, California 94143, USA.

Water borne cercaria(ae) of the trematode genus Schistosoma rapidly penetrate host skin. A single serine protease activity, cercarial elastase, is deposited in advance of the invading parasite by holocytosis of vesicles from ten large acetabular gland cells. Cercarial elastase activity is a composite of multiple isoforms.
