Smartphone-based technology is increasingly used in veterinary medicine as a complementary tool for cardiac auscultation and ECG recording. This prospective observational study evaluates a digital stethoscope (DS) that consists of simultaneous phonocardiographic and one-lead ECG recording (dECG) in adult horses, comparing it with auscultation using a conventional stethoscope (CS) and reference base-apex ECG (rECG). A total of 104 horses underwent cardiac auscultation using CSs and DSs to detect arrhythmias and murmurs.

Preprocessing and Denoising Techniques for Electrocardiography and Magnetocardiography: A Review.

Bioengineering (Basel)

November 2024

Key Laboratory of Ultra-Weak Magnetic Field Measurement Technology, Ministry of Education, School of Instrumentation and Optoelectronic Engineering, Beihang University, Beijing 100191, China.

This review systematically analyzes the latest advancements in preprocessing techniques for Electrocardiography (ECG) and Magnetocardiography (MCG) signals over the past decade. ECG and MCG play crucial roles in cardiovascular disease (CVD) detection, but both are susceptible to noise interference. This paper categorizes and compares different ECG denoising methods based on noise types, such as baseline wander (BW), electromyographic noise (EMG), power line interference (PLI), and composite noise.

Sex hormones and reproductive factors with cardiac arrhythmia and ECG indices: a mendelian randomization study.

BMC Cardiovasc Disord

November 2024

Cardiovascular Medicine Department, Cardiology Center, First Hospital of Jilin University, No.1 Xinmin Street, Changchun City, 130021, Jilin Province, China.

Background: Sex is a determinant of the incidence and etiology of arrhythmia. Observational and basic studies suggest that sex hormones are essential in this process; however, the relationship between sex hormones and arrhythmia remains unclear. Mendelian randomization (MR) was used to investigate the causal relationships between sex hormone levels, arrhythmia, and electrocardiographic (ECG) indices.

A generation ago thrombolytic therapy led to a paradigm shift in myocardial infarction (MI), from Q-wave/non-Q-wave to ST-segment elevation MI (STEMI) vs non-STEMI. Using STE on the electrocardiogram (ECG) as a surrogate marker for acute coronary occlusion (ACO) allowed for rapid diagnosis and treatment. But the vast research catalyzed by the STEMI paradigm has revealed increasing anomalies: 25% of "non-STEMI" have ACO with delayed reperfusion and higher mortality.

Mental distress-induced imbalances in autonomic nervous system activities adversely affect the electrical stability of the cardiac system, with heart rate variability (HRV) identified as a related indicator. Traditional HRV measurements use electrocardiography (ECG), but impulse radio ultra-wideband (IR-UWB) radar has shown potential in HRV measurement, although it is rarely applied to psychological studies. This study aimed to assess early high levels of mental distress using HRV indices obtained using radar through modified signal processing tailored to reduce phase noise and improve positional accuracy.
