Two cases of severe complications due to injection of hydrogen peroxide under pressure into areas of muscular attrition in war wounds are reported. In both cases the administration of hydrogen peroxide was associated with tachypnoea, with major arterial desaturation and a precordial "mill-wheel" murmur was heard. In one case, these symptoms were followed by hemiplegia caused by paradoxical arterial gas embolism, and in the other case by a pulmonary oedema confirmed by computerized tomography.

As no reference method is specified by the standards, we have adapted a technique where pseudo-peroxydasic activity of the hemoglobin is revealed by 3,3'-5,5', tetramethylbenzidine, a non carcinogenic chromogen derivate from benzidine. A 4 points reference scale is plotted for each plasma to be tested, thus reducing eventual interferences between pseudo-peroxydasic activity of the hemoglobin and other plasma proteins.

An immunonephelemetric determination of rabbit haptoglobin was carried out. At first, pure haptoglobin was isolated and then monospecific immunserums were obtained from rats. This method completes the regular determination of haptoglobin in all cases where the peroxydasic activity of the haptoglobin-hemoglobin complex is inhibited either by an hemolytic process, as is the case for rabbits, or by some inhibitors of the peroxydasic reaction.
