Objectives: Thyroid, adrenal glands and gonadal hormones play a role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis of the body via the receptors located in the adipose tissue. The correlations between serum resistin (RES) and function of other hormonal axes in patients with AN have not been established, yet. Therefore, the aim of this study is: 1) assessment of concentrations of thyroid hormones (FT4, TSH), adrenal hormones (ACTH, cortisol), sex hormones (LH, FSH, estradiol, testosterone); 2) establishing their relationship with BMI and 3) analysis of correlations between examined hormones and RES serum concentrations in adolescent female patients with AN.

Orexin A (OxA), a recently discovered neuropeptide, is synthesized mainly by neurons located in the posterolateral hypothalamus and is a 33 amino acid peptide with N-terminal pyroglutamyl residue and two inter-chain disulfide bonds. It is a potent agonist for both the orexin-1 (OxR1) and orexin-2 (OxR2) receptors. Orexin A and its receptors are widely distributed in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral organs suggesting the pleiotropic functions of this peptide.

Leptin is a mainly adipocyte-secreted protein that was discovered 5 years ago. Most of the research following this discovery focused on the role of leptin in body weight regulation, aiming to illuminate the pathophysiology of human obesity. However, more and more data are emerging that leptin is not only important in the regulation of food intake and energy balance, but that it also has a function as a metabolic and neuroendocrine hormone.
