More than 40 volatile compounds were detected in sea cucumber powder during the processing (through freeze-dried, desalination, supercritical fluid extraction and ultra-micro grinding) by multiple methods including e-nose, GC-IMS and GC-MS. It has been determined that aldehydes are the predominant volatile substances in the original freeze-dried sample, accounting for about 30 % of the total volatile substances. In addition, we established a supercritical fluid extraction strategy that could efficiently remove the aldehydes from the sea cucumber powder.

This study examinates the challenges of cryopreserving sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) eggs, a task hindered by factors like low membrane permeability and high sensitivity to cryoprotective agents (CPAs). While successful cryopreservation has been achieved for some marine invertebrates, eggs remain problematic due to their unique characteristics. The study explores the impact of various CPAs and cryopreservation techniques on sea urchin eggs, employing scanning and transmission electron microscopy to analyze cellular damage.

The collector urchin, Tripneustes gratilla, is an ecologically important member of the grazing community of Hawai'i's coral reefs. Beyond its ability to maintain balance between native seaweeds and corals, T. gratilla has also been used as a food source and a biocontrol agent against alien invasive algae species.

Background: Sea urchins have contributed greatly to knowledge of fertilization, embryogenesis, and cell biology. However, until now, they have not been genetic model organisms because of their long generation times and lack of tools for husbandry and gene manipulation. We recently established the sea urchin Lytechinus pictus, as a multigenerational model Echinoderm, because of its relatively short generation time of 4-6 months and ease of laboratory culture.
