Objective: Our objective was to offer a preliminary description of MR lymphangiography; its uses and limitations; and its findings in infants, children, and young adults.
Subjects And Methods: Twenty-nine patients underwent 32 MR lymphangiographic examinations for evaluation of vascular malformations, other masses, soft-tissue swelling, gigantism, fluid accumulation, or pain. MR lymphangiography was based on a heavily T2-weighted fast spin-echo sequence and a maximum-intensity-projection algorithm.

Patients with schistosomiasis and portal hypertension have significantly lower levels of hydroxyproline in their saphenous veins and anterior rectus sheaths than do individuals without schistosomal hepatic fibrosis. The stomach of patients with schistosomal portal hypertension demonstrates an increased number of lymphatics by lymphangiography. The disrupted lymph node architecture in these patients could be partially responsible for dilation, tortuosity, and retrograde lymph flow in the gastric lymphatics.

The immunologically privileged status of the hamster cheek pouch has been attributed to both the loose, areolar connective tissue that lines the pouch and to the lack of lymphatics in it. Although early reports described an absence of demonstrable lymphatics by classical histologic and lymphangiographic methods, issue has been taken recently as to whether the cheek pouch is alymphatic. We became interested in this issue accidentally during a study of microembolic microvascular injury.

None of the patients died or had severe complications during their hospitalisation. The left ureter was accidently transected in two patients and both were corrected immediately.

The lymphangiograms of 51 patients have been checked against the results of microscopic study of lymphadenectomy specimens. The radiogram was false-positive in 3, false-negative in 7 cases.
