The increased availability and production of lignocellulosic agroindustrial wastes has originated proposals for their use as raw material to obtain biofuels (ethanol and biodiesel) or derived products. However, for biomass generated from lignocellulosic residues to be successfully degraded, in most cases it requires a physical (thermal), chemical, or enzymatic pretreatment before the application of microbial or enzymatic fermentation technologies (biocatalysis). In the context of enzymatic technologies, fungi have demonstrated to produce enzymes capable of degrading polysaccharides like cellulose, hemicelluloses and pectin.

Heparanase is an endoglycosidase that degrades heparan sulfate side chains of heparan sulfate-proteoglycans. It liberates heparan sulfate-bound growth factors and thereby promotes blood vessel sprouting and angiogenesis. The subterranean blind mole rat, Spalax, is a wild mammal that lives most of its life in underground tunnels where it experiences sharp fluctuations in oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.

Ginseng is known to have inhibitory effects on UGT1A9 activity. However, little is known about the inhibitory effects of ginsenosides, the major active compounds in ginseng, on UGT1A9 activity. In vitro investigation of UGT1A9 inhibition by ginsenosides was carried out using human liver microsomes (HLMs).

Introduction: The use of antiretroviral therapy in HIV‑infected patients can lead to disturbances in kidney function. Renal dysfunction can also be caused by the direct effects of HIV on the kidneys. The assessment of renal function is needed to monitor these patients for the development of chronic kidney disease.

Klotho, a putative aging suppressor, shares sequence similarity with members of the glycosidase family 1. It has been identified in several vertebrate species, but only mouse Klotho has so far been proven to exhibit β-glucuronidase activity. Thus, the argument that Klotho from animals other than mouse has glycosidase activity remains open.
