The case of a patient with carcinoma of the convergence of the hepatic ducts successfully treated with more extensive hepatic resection is reported. Stress is laid on the problems of exact preoperative diagnosis and of treatment. Most operations are in fact purely palliative and the literature contains very few cases of hepatic resection for neoplasia of the convergence.

Retinoids and retinoid-binding proteins: Unexpected roles in metabolic disease.

Alterations in tissue expression levels of both retinol-binding protein 2 (RBP2) and retinol-binding protein 4 (RBP4) have been associated with metabolic disease, specifically with obesity, glucose intolerance and hepatic steatosis. Our laboratories have shown that this involves novel pathways not previously considered as possible linkages between impaired retinoid metabolism and metabolic disease development. We have established both biochemically and structurally that RBP2 binds with very high affinity to very long-chain unsaturated 2-monoacylglycerols like the canonical endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG) and other endocannabinoid-like substances.

The unique architecture of the liver consists of hepatic lobules, dividing the hepatic features of metabolism into 2 distinct zones, namely the pericentral and periportal zones, the spatial characteristics of which are broadly defined as metabolic zonation. R-spondin3 (Rspo3), a bioactive protein promoting the Wnt signaling pathway, regulates metabolic features especially around hepatic central veins. However, the functional impact of hepatic metabolic zonation, regulated by the Rspo3/Wnt signaling pathway, on whole-body metabolism homeostasis remains poorly understood.

Carbon tetrachloride does not promote hepatic fibrosis in ob/ob mice via downregulation of lipocalin-2 protein.

Department of Anatomy and Convergence Medical Science, College of Medicine, Metabolic Dysfunction Liver Disease Research Center, Institute of Medical Science, Gyeongsang National University, Jinju, 52727, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Although leptin-deficient ob/ob mice have been investigated to determine whether hepatic steatosis promotes susceptibility to hepatotoxic insults, carbon tetrachloride (CCl)-induced hepatic fibrosis in ob/ob mice remains largely unknown. In this study, we evaluate the pathogenic mechanisms of hepatic fibrosis in CCl-treated wild-type (WT) and ob/ob mice and analyze some parameters related to lipogenesis, inflammation, fibrosis, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and autophagy. CCl treatment attenuated liver weight and lipogenesis in ob/ob mice.

Dynamic communication between hepatocytes and the environment is critical in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. Clinical immunotherapy against HCC is currently unsatisfactory and needs more systemic considerations, including the identification of new biomarkers and immune checkpoints. Transmembrane 4 L six family member 5 (TM4SF5) is known to promote HCC, but it remains unclear how cancerous hepatocytes avoid immune surveillance and whether avoidance can be blocked.

Unlabelled: Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a gut-derived endotoxin, is a recognized risk factor for both Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Rocaglamide-A (Roc-A), a natural compound derived from the genus Aglaia, is known for its pharmacological and immunosuppressive effects on various cell types. Although our recent investigations have unveiled Roc-A's anti-adipogenic role in adipocytes, its mechanism in hepatic inflammation remains elusive.
