A murine model of induced myocarditis and cardiac dysfunction.

Microbiol Spectr

January 2025

Department of Molecular and Comparative Pathobiology, Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland, USA.

Unlabelled: is a protozoan parasite that causes human and animal African trypanosomiases (HAT and AAT). Cardiac symptoms are commonly reported in HAT patients, and intracardiac parasites with accompanying myocarditis have been observed in both natural hosts and animal models of infection. Despite the importance of as a cause of cardiac dysfunction and the dramatic socioeconomic impact of African trypanosomiases in sub-Saharan Africa, there are currently no reproducible murine models of associated cardiomyopathy.

Comparative Evaluation of Consumer Wearable Devices for Atrial Fibrillation Detection: Validation Study.

JMIR Form Res

January 2025

Limburg Clinical Research Center/Mobile Health Unit, Faculty of Medicine and Life Sciences, Hasselt University, Hasselt, Belgium.

Background: Consumer-oriented wearable devices (CWDs) such as smartphones and smartwatches have gained prominence for their ability to detect atrial fibrillation (AF) through proprietary algorithms using electrocardiography or photoplethysmography (PPG)-based digital recordings. Despite numerous individual validation studies, a direct comparison of interdevice performance is lacking.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the ability of CWDs to distinguish between sinus rhythm and AF.

Background: Acute heart failure (AHF) poses significant diagnostic challenges in the emergency room (ER) because of its varied clinical presentation and limitations of traditional diagnostic methods. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a deep-learning model using electrocardiogram (ECG) data to enhance AHF identification in the ER.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed the ECG data of 19,285 patients who visited ERs of three hospitals between 2016 and 2020; 9,119 with available left ventricular ejection fraction and N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide level data and who were diagnosed with AHF were included in the study.

Background: Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is characterized by intense central inflammation, leading to substantial post-hemorrhagic complications such as vasospasm and delayed cerebral ischemia. Given the anti-inflammatory effect of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) and its ability to promote brain plasticity, taVNS has emerged as a promising therapeutic option for SAH patients. However, the effects of taVNS on cardiovascular dynamics in critically ill patients, like those with SAH, have not yet been investigated.

Biomarkers.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Department of Neurology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA.

Background: There is increasing need for noninvasive biomarkers of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) neuropathologic change for early detection and intervention through risk-factor modification and disease-modifying therapies. One such biomarker is the prediction of chronological age from routine clinical tests such as an electrocardiogram (EKG) to discriminate between observed biological age from chronological age for healthy aging. Deviation of true age from predicted age has been associated with heart failure, hypertension, and coronary heart disease.
