Indoor dust can adsorb various pollutants and long-term deposition can significantly impact air quality and human health. This study investigated the occurrence, source apportionment, and health risks associated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives (d-PAHs) in indoor dust, by focusing on residential and public buildings in Nanjing, China. The concentration of 16 PAHs and 27 d-PAHs ranged from 511 to 5472 ng/g and from 422 to 2904 ng/g, with the most abundant compounds being fluoranthene and 1,2-benz[a]anthraquinone, respectively.

Acute renal failure secondary to medicinal plants is common in countries where the use of traditional phytotherapy is preponderant. Although the nephrotoxic potentials of some herbal preparations have been well characterized, the use of many medicinal plants is still considered largely safe, often relying on weak evidence. Here, we report the case of a 17-year-old patient with severe acute renal failure, associated to an esophagitis with erosive gastritis as well as an inflammatory anemia, with no obvious etiology.

Lepidium meyenii (Maca) is a plant that has nutritional benefits and increases the effectiveness of male reproduction. In this study, oxidative stress-exposed New Zealand rabbits were used to assess the ameliorative effects of daily Maca ingestion on testicular and epididymal tissues as well as the quality of fresh and frozen/thawed sperm. Twenty-four 40-week-old, healthy New Zealand white male rabbits were divided into four groups.

Spatiotemporal variation in the concentrations of mercury (Hg) and arsenic (As) in body feathers of Red-throated Ant-Tanager (Driophlox fuscicauda) and Clay-colored thrush (Turdus grayi) were evaluated. Body feathers were obtained from scientific collections (specimens collected from 1960 to 2011) in Mexico. Trace elements concentrations were determined by voltammetry through acid digestion.

Marine microorganisms play a critical role in regulating atmospheric CO concentration via the biological carbon pump. Deposition of continental mineral dust on the sea surface increases carbon sequestration but the interaction between minerals and marine microorganisms is not well understood. We discovered that the interaction of clay minerals with dissolved organic matter and a γ-proteobacterium in seawater increases Transparent Exopolymer Particle (TEP) concentration, leading to organoclay floc formation.
