Urban air pollution has been a global challenge world-wide. While urban vegetation or forest modelling can be useful in reducing the toxicities of the atmospheric gases by their absorption, the surge in gaseous pollutants negatively affects plant growth, thereby altering photosynthetic efficiency and harvest index. The present review analyses our current understanding of the toxic and beneficial effects of atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NO), hydrogen sulphide (HS) and carbon monoxide (CO) on plant growth and metabolism.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a versatile endogenous molecule with multiple physiological roles, including neurotransmission, vasodilation, and immune regulation. As part of the immune response, NO exerts antimicrobial effects by producing reactive nitrogen species (RNS). These RNS combat pathogens via mechanisms such as DNA deamination, S-nitrosylation of thiol groups, and lipid peroxidation, leading to disruptions in microbial cell membranes and vital protein functions.

Studies have found that air pollution is a potential risk factor for dementia, but the literature remains inconclusive. This study aimed to evaluate the association between three major air pollutants (i.

Melatonin is considered a multifunctional stress metabolite and a novel plant hormone affecting seed germination, root architecture, circadian rhythms, leaf senescence, and fruit ripening. Melatonin functions related to plant adaptation to stress stimuli of various natures are considered especially important. One of the key components of melatonin's stress-protective action is its ability to neutralise reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species directly.

The selective oxidation of NH-N into dinitrogen (N) is still a challenge. Currently, traditional advanced oxidation processes often involve in the chlorine free radicals to increase the selectivity of NH-N oxidation products towards N but is usually accompanied by the production of many toxic disinfection by-product. Herein, we reported a novel catalytic ozonation system (UV/O/MgO/NaSO) for selective NH-N oxidation based on the reducing capability and photochemical properties of NaSO.
