Problem: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is a critical pregnancy complication linked to increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. Inflammation plays a key role in FGR's pathophysiology, and systemic inflammation markers may serve as predictors. This study evaluates the role of various inflammation indices; systemic immune-inflammation index (SII), systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), lymphocyte-to-platelet ratio (LMR), monocyte-to-platelet ratio (MPR), aggregate systemic inflammation index (AISI), systemic coagulation inflammation index (SCII), and immature granulocyte percentage (IG%) in predicting FGR.

Tissue-resident immune cells: from defining characteristics to roles in diseases.

Signal Transduct Target Ther

January 2025

Department of Thoracic Surgery, National Cancer Center/National Clinical Research Center for Cancer/Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

Tissue-resident immune cells (TRICs) are a highly heterogeneous and plastic subpopulation of immune cells that reside in lymphoid or peripheral tissues without recirculation. These cells are endowed with notably distinct capabilities, setting them apart from their circulating leukocyte counterparts. Many studies demonstrate their complex roles in both health and disease, involving the regulation of homeostasis, protection, and destruction.

The impact of aging on neutrophil functions and the contribution to periodontitis.

Int J Oral Sci

January 2025

Department of Plastic Surgery, Maxillofacial & Oral Health, University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, VA, USA.

The increasing aging population and aging-associated diseases have become a global issue for decades. People over 65 show an increased prevalence and greater severity of periodontitis, which poses threats to overall health. Studies have demonstrated a significant association between aging and the dysfunction of neutrophils, critical cells in the early stages of periodontitis, and their crosstalk with macrophages and T and B lymphocytes to establish the periodontal lesion.

Purpose: Exploring the risk factors for mortality of hemodialysis patients undergoing COVID-19 and the changes in mortality before and after the opening of the epidemic in northern Hunan province, China.

Methods: We analyzed 230 hemodialysis patients with COVID-19 in the Yiyang Central Hospital from November 01, 2022 to February 28, 2023. Demographic data, laboratory data and public diseases were collected.

Inhibition of Interleukin-40 prevents multi-organ damage during sepsis by blocking NETosis.

Crit Care

January 2025

Center of Clinical Laboratory Medicine, Zhongda Hospital, Southeast University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

Despite intensive clinical and scientific efforts, the mortality rate of sepsis remains high due to the lack of precise biomarkers for patient stratification and therapeutic guidance. Interleukin 40 (IL-40), a novel cytokine with immune regulatory functions in human diseases, was elevated at admission in two independent cohorts of patients with sepsis. High levels of secreted IL-40 in septic patients were positively correlated with PCT, CRP, lactate (LDH), and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores, in which IL-40 levels were used to stratify the early death of critically ill patients with sepsis.
