The injection of copper citrate into pregnant golden hamsters induces a specific pattern of cardiovascular malformations in their embroys. The syndrome consists of double-outlet right ventricle, pulmonary hypoplasia and a ventricular spetal defect.

Cardiomyocyte injury is closely related to various myocardial diseases, and S-Allyl-L-cysteine (SAC) has been found to have myocardial protective effects, but its mechanism is currently unclear. Meanwhile, copper also has various physiological functions, and this study found that copper inhibited cell viability in a concentration and time-dependent manner, and was associated with multiple modes of death. Elesclomol plus CuCl (ES + Cu) significantly inhibited cell viability, and this effect could only be blocked by copper chelator TTM, indicating that "ES + Cu" induced cuproptosis in cardiomyocytes.

Aims: Circumstantial anxiety as well as chronic stress may stimulate the release of stress hormones including catecholamines. Adrenaline toxicity has been implicated in many cardiovascular conditions. Copper is a vital mineral, and an optimal amount of copper is required to support normal physiologic processes in various systems, including the cardiovascular system. Over the past few decades, copper-induced cell death, named cuproptosis, has become increasingly recognized as an important process mediating the pathogenesis and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including atherosclerosis, stroke, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and heart failure. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of cuproptosis in CVD may be useful for improving CVD management.

Copper-induced cardiac injury is not widely reported in spite of its ability to cause oxidative damage and tissue injury. Structural and morphological changes in the cardiac tissue are triggered via oxidative stress and inflammatory responses following copper exposure. The varied and unavoidable exposure of copper through contaminated food and water warrants a safe and effective agent against its harmful effects.

We assessed the protective effects of Gandouling (GDL) on copper sulfate (CuSO4)-induced heart injuries in Sprague−Dawley rats, which were randomly divided into the control, CuSO4, GDL + CuSO4 and penicillamine + CuSO4 groups. The rats received intragastric GDL (400 mg/kg body weight) once per day for 42 consecutive days after 56 days of CuSO4 exposure, and penicillamine was used as a positive control. The levels of plasma inflammatory cytokines (IMA, hFABP, cTn-I and BNP) were determined using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
