The clinical significance of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in pediatric patients remains an area of evolving understanding, particularly regarding their utility in the presence or absence of pre-existing heart conditions. While clear cutoff values and established roles in heart failure are understood in adult patients, pediatric norms vary with age, complicating interpretation. Notably, the emergence of multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) has highlighted the importance of these markers not only in the detection of acute heart failure but also as a marker of disease severity and even as a differential diagnosis tool.

Background: Infectious states are subtle and rapidly evolving conditions observed daily in the emergency department (ED), and their prognostic evaluation remains a complex clinical challenge. Recently, estimated plasma volume status (ePVS) has been suggested to have a prognostic role in conditions where volemic alteration is central to the pathophysiology. The aim of this study was to verify whether ePVS recorded at ED admission can provide prognostic indications of 30-day mortality in patients with infection.

Aim: To evaluate and compare the accuracy of volemic status determination by remote dielectric sensing with computed tomography (CT) in patients with acute decompensated heart failure.

Materials And Methods: In 28 patients volemic status was determined by ReDS (remote dielectric sensing), chest computed tomography (CCT), and chest X-ray twice during hospitalization (the day of admission and the day of discharge from the hospital). The ReDS measurements were then compared with CT data using software that allows the use of semi-automated tools to determine mean lung density (MLD).

Background: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) occurs in 20% to 40% of patients who underwent cardiac surgery and can compromise the postoperative course, especially in those with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. The most common causes are related to surgical trauma and the high variations in volemic and electrolyte balance in the postoperative period.

Objectives: As cardioplegic solutions can significantly impact both these factors, the study aimed to assess the role of Del Nido (DN) cardioplegia on the onset of POAF.
