Four selected methods have been evaluated and field tested as candidates for a specific, continuous procedure for monitoring phosgene in air at or below concentrations of 0.05 ppm. The methods evaluated were automated colorimetry, gas chromatography, infrared spectrophotometry and a recently developed paper tape monitor. A standard manual colorimetric procedure was used as a reference method. The paper tape, infrared and automated gas chromatographic techniques most closely fulfilled the criteria set forth for an "ideal", selective, continuous procedure for phosgene.

A metal-free process has been developed for the sustainable synthesis of medicinally important sulfonylureas in one pot via the direct reaction of sulfonamides with amides in green solvent (DMC). The reaction proceeded efficiently at room temperature, and the products were obtained in good to excellent yields. The use of readily accessible, inexpensive, and environmentally benign starting materials and reagents, metal-free mild reaction conditions, wide substrate scope, tolerance to air and moisture, operational simplicity, and good atom economy are the salient features of this reaction protocol.

The toxicity of phosgene (COCl ) combined with its extensive use as a reactant and building block in the chemical industry make its fast and accurate detection a prerequisite. We have developed a carboxylic derivative of 5,6-pinenepyridine which is able to act as colorimetric and fluorimetric sensor for phosgene in air and solution. For the first time, the formation of a pyrido-[2,1-a]isoindolone was used for this purpose.

We report on the concentration ranges and combustion source-related emission profiles of organic and inorganic species released during 34 major industrial fires in the UK. These episodic events tend to be acute in nature and demand a rapid public health risk assessment to indicate the likely impact on exposed populations. The objective of this paper is to improve our understanding of the nature, composition and potential health impacts of emissions from major incident fires and so support the risk assessment process.
