Background: Long-term use of levodopa, a metabolic precursor of dopamine (DA) for alleviation of motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD), can cause a serious side effect known as levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID). With the development of LID, high-frequency gamma oscillations (~100 Hz) are registered in the motor cortex (MCx) in patients with PD and rats with experimental PD. Studying alterations in the activity within major components of motor networks during transition from levodopa-off state to dyskinesia can provide useful information about their contribution to the development of abnormal gamma oscillations and LID.

Development of a human tyrosinase activity inhibition assay using human melanoma cell lysate.

Biotechniques

November 2024

Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics and School of Environment and Science, Griffith University, Nathan, Qld, 4111, Australia.

Tyrosinase (TYR) inhibitors are required to treat skin hyperpigmentation. Currently live cell-based TYR assays and mushroom TYR assays are the common methods used to screen for TYR inhibitors. However, these methods are either time consuming and expensive or are not human TYR (TYR) specific.

Interaction between central cholecystokinin and dopaminergic system in layer-type chickens' food intake.

Behav Brain Res

March 2025

Department of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Science and Research Branch, Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran.

The mechanisms governing food intake and appetite regulation in the brain are intricate and vary across different animal species. Dopamine and cholecystokinin (CCK) are recognized as two critical neurotransmitters involved in the control of food intake; however, the potential interactions between these neurotransmitters remain poorly understood. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the interactions between central CCK and the dopaminergic system in the feeding behavior of layer-type chickens.

Introduction: Parkinson's disease (PD) is commonly characterized by severe dopamine (DA) depletion within the substantia nigra (SN) leading to a myriad of motor and non-motor symptoms. One underappreciated and prevalent non-motor symptom, Parkinson's disease-associated psychosis (PDAP), significantly erodes patient and caregiver quality of life yet remains vastly understudied. While the gold standard pharmacotherapy for motor symptoms Levodopa (LD) is initially highly effective, it can lead to motor fluctuations like LD-induced dyskinesia (LID) and non-motor fluctuations such as intermittent PDAP.

A Novel Look at Mechanisms and Applications of Xanthohumol (XN) in Dermatology and Cosmetology.

Int J Mol Sci

November 2024

Chair of Cosmetology, Department of Cosmetology and Aesthetic Dermatology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Medical University of Lódź, Muszyńskiego 1 Street, 91-151 Łódź, Poland.

Xanthohumol (XN), representing the group of chalcones, is a hydroxyl and superoxide free radical scavenger. It also has antimicrobial properties, showing antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes. XN exerts an inhibitory effect on tyrosinase (it hinders the oxidation of l-tyrosine and l-DOPA).
