Using the value of 0.24 fmoles/microgram DNA as breaking point between high and low binding capacities, we quantified receptors for 17 beta-estradiol (ER), 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHTR), progesterone (PR) and cortisol (CR) in normal and neoplastic human uterine tissues. Concerning receptors occurrence, significant relationships were observed between ER and PR, ER and DHTR, and DHTR and PR. A direct correlation between the presence of ER and tumor grading was found: PR was less frequent in grade II and absent in grade III endometrial carcinoma, however this was not a significant correlation. In endometrial carcinoma at least 1 of the receptors was detected in 67-91% of the cases, 3 receptors (ER, DHTR, PR) in 56%, and all 4 receptors in 45%. The simultaneous detection of multiple receptors could play an important role in determining hormone response.

Paracrine interactions between ovarian theca-interstitial cells (TICs) and granulosa cells (GCs) play an important role in the regulation of follicular steroidogenesis. Androgens serve as substrates for aromatization as well as affect GC function. This study evaluated the effects of co-culture of GC with TICs and the role of testosterone (T) and 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and estradiol (E2) in modulation of GC expression of genes involved in the production of progesterone: 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase/Δ isomerase (Hsd3b) and cholesterol side-chain cleavage (Cyp11).

During calorie restriction (CR), endotherms adjust several physiological processes including the decrease of core body temperature (T) and reduction of energy expenditure. We recently found that CR-induced hypothermia is regulated in a sex-dependent manner in mice with lowered central insulin-like growth factor receptor signaling. Here, we describe the contribution of sex hormones to CR-induced hypothermia in wild type C57BL6 mice by measuring T of female and male mice following bilateral gonadectomy and hormonal replacement.

Male sexual behavior (MSB) in rodents, in both its consummatory and motivational components, is regulated by hormones such as testosterone, 17β-estradiol and 5-α-dihydrotestosterone. In experiments, neonatal treatment with clomipramine (CMI; a serotonin reuptake inhibitor) reproduces some of the signs of depression in adult age, including reduced sexual behavior manifested in a lower percentage of subjects that mount, intromit and ejaculate, although their testosterone levels were not altered. However, the effect of this treatment on estrogen levels and the consequences of hormone substitution using 17β-estradiol and 5-α-dihydrotestosterone on the expression of male sexual behavior are still unknown.
