Purpose: This paper outlines the commissioning of the Varian (VMS, Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) Universal Interstitial Cylinder (UIC) applicator set for Ir-192 HDR brachytherapy. The UIC was commissioned for use with CT and MRI and a custom phantom was designed to avoid the introduction of water-like materials into the needle guide tracks. Various marker strands were investigated to determine which allowed the most accurate reconstruction of source positions.

RNA binding proteins (RBPs) are responsible for facilitating a wealth of post-transcriptional gene regulatory functions. The role of an RBP on regulated transcripts can be investigated through a pull-down of the RBP and high-throughput sequencing (HTS) of the associated transcripts. Photoactivatable Ribonucleoside-Enhanced Crosslinking and Immunoprecipitation (PAR-CLIP), is one such pull-down method that isolates, detects, and sequences the cDNA of RBP-associated transcripts.

Carboxypeptidase II (CBPII) in brain metabolizes the neuroactive substance N-acetyl-L-aspartyl-L-glutamate (NAGG) to yield the elements of glutamate and N-acetyl-aspartate (NAA). In peripheral organs, CBPII is known as prostrate specific membrane antigen (PSMA), which presents an important target for nuclear medicine imaging in prostate cancer. Available PSMA ligands for PET imaging do not cross the blood-brain barrier, and there is scant knowledge of the neurobiology of CBPII, despite its implication in the regulation of glutamatergic neurotransmission.
