Lipid emulsion therapy (LET) is the intravenous administration of lipid solution for parenteral alimentation, especially in preterm infants and adults with debilitating illnesses. It has also been used in attempts of detoxification in suspected cases of drug overdose. Whether this interferes with circulation and/or perfusion is debatable, and it is suggested that it may interfere with coagulation process.

BACKGROUND Chemical burns in the oral cavity, although rare, cause more severe tissue damage than thermal burns, continuing tissue destruction even after removing the causative substance. Prompt identification of the substance, exposure extent, time from injury to treatment, and the injured area are imperative for effective management. This report details severe oral burns in an elderly woman from accidental NaOH ingestion.

Glucose homeostasis is a real challenge for extremely preterm infants (EPIs) who have both limited substrate availability and immature glucose metabolism regulation. In the first days of life, EPIs frequently develop transient glucose intolerance, which has a complex pathophysiology that associates unregulated gluconeogenesis, immature insulin secretion, and peripheral insulin resistance. In this population, glucocorticoid therapy is frequently administrated to prevent severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
