Cytotoxicity screenings have identified plants as potential sources of antitumor lead compounds. In this work, several extracts from were prepared using different solvents (acetone, methanol, and supercritical CO) and extraction techniques (maceration, ultrasound-assisted, and supercritical fluid extraction), and their chemical composition was detailed using high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector. The cytotoxic activity of the major compounds identified, namely, rosmarinic acid () and abietane diterpenes 7α,6β-dihydroxyroyleanone (), 7α-formyloxy-6β-hydroxyroyleanone (), 7α-acetoxy-6β-hydroxyroyleanone (), and coleon U (), was evaluated in a battery of human cancer cell lines, including breast (MDA-MB-231, MCF-7), colon (HCT116), and lung (NCI-H460, NCI-H460/R) cancer, and also in healthy lung (MCR-5) cells.

Background: Hyperlipidaemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and atherosclerosis is the underlying cause of both myocardial infarction and stroke. We have previously shown that the Pro251 variant of perilipin-2 reduces plasma triglycerides and may therefore be beneficial to reduce atherosclerosis development.
Objective: We sought to delineate putative beneficial effects of the Pro251 variant of perlipin-2 on subclinical atherosclerosis and the mechanism by which it acts.

Medicinal plants of the genus (Lamiaceae) are known for their ethnopharmacological relevance, mainly against infectious, dermatologic and gastrointestinal pathologies. Three species originated from South Africa, namely , and the rare were hereby screened for their antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities related with their known and/or potential ethnomedicinal uses. Twenty-six extracts were prepared by the combination of extraction methods (infusion, decoction, microwave-assisted, ultrasound-assisted, maceration and supercritical fluid extraction) with different polarity solvents (water, methanol, acetone and supercritical CO).

Invited for this month's cover picture are Professor Célia Fonseca Guerra from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and Leiden University (The Netherlands) and André Nicolai Petelski from UTN-FRRe University of Argentine (Argentina). The cover picture shows a colored pallet of melamine and ammeline tautomers that form hydrogen-bonded hexameric rosettes. When it comes to self-assembling capabilities, one of the ammeline structures (red) is shown to be distinctly superior to melamine, both in the gas phase and in water.

Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA. Electronic address:
This lecture remembers Professor Nicolai Volodos, a pioneer innovator and a giant in vascular and endovascular surgery, who performed the first endovascular repair of a thoracic aneurysm in 1987 and developed a complex endovascular program by the end of the 1980s. The manuscript recalls major innovations and innovators in vascular surgery, examines the challenges innovators and those who adopt innovations face and discusses the modern meaning of the Hippocratic Oath. The author concludes that surgical innovations are essential to advance cost-effective care, and shared decision making on adopting new therapies by an ethical surgeon and a well informed patient is the cornerstone of ethical patient care.
