Purpose: Cancer cachexia is a devastating and understudied illness in patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The primary objective was to identify clinical characteristics and serum levels of cytokines and cachexia-related factors in patients with HNSCC. The secondary objective was to detect the occurrence of cytokine and cachexia-related factor gene expression in HNSCC tumors.

Transcript profiles and deduced changes of metabolic pathways in maternal and filial tissues of developing barley grains.

Different aspects of barley grain development have been studied in detail, but a more global analysis of gene expression patterns is still missing. We have employed macro arrays, containing 1184 unique sequences from 1421 barley cDNA fragments, to study gene expression profiles in maternal and filial tissues of developing barley caryopses from fertilization to early storage phase. Principle component analysis (PCA) defined distinct expression networks in the pre-storage (0, 2, and 4 days after flowering (DAF)) and early storage phase (10 and 12 DAF).

Cachexia in cancer is characterized by progressive emaciation involving depletion of host adipose tissue stores, the molecular mechanism of which remains largely unknown. In this study, we have attempted to clarify the biologic characteristics of lipid-depleting factor in a mouse cachexia model. Utilizing differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes, we established an assay method quantifying the lipid-depleting activity in plasma derived from colon-26-inoculated mice and then analyzed the associated molecular mechanism.

The controversial question of the relationship between obesity and disease has been considerably clearer after the demonstration in several prospective, epidemiological studies that the subgroup of central, visceral obesity is particularly prone to develop cardiovascular disease, stroke, and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. Visceral obesity is associated with multiple central endocrine aberrations. The hypothalamo-adrenal axis is apparently sensitive to stimuli, sex steroid hormone secretion blunted, and hyperandrogenicity is found in women.
