The effect of 5.5 mg of cortisone acetate given to adult mice 1 day prior to the injection of 4 × 10 sheep erythrocytes was studied. This drug is able to suppress more than 95 per cent of splenic plaque-forming cells (PFC) compared with immunized animals not treated with cortisone. However, the anti-sheep red cell haemolytic titre in the blood was not affected. Several hypotheses to explain this paradox were tested experimentally. Plaque-forming cells in the bone-marrow of cortisone-treated mice, instead of being suppressed, increased to more than ten times their number compared with the controlled animals.

The Enterobacter cloacae complex, a prominent bacterium responsible worldwide for most bloodstream infections in the hospital environment, has shown broad-spectrum antibiotic resistance, including carbapenems. Therefore, bacteriophages have again attracted the attention of the science and medical community as an alternative to control Multidrug resistant bacteria. In this study, water samples from Río Abajo River, in Panama City, Panama, were collected, for phage isolation, purification, characterization and propagation against the E.

Improved Zika virus plaque assay using Vero/TMPRSS2 cell line.

Unlabelled: Plaque assay is the gold standard for the quantification of viable cytopathic viruses like Zika virus (ZIKV). Some strains of ZIKV produce plaques that are very difficult to accurately visualize and count on the commonly used Vero cell line. From data generated in our lab, we became curious if Vero/TMPRSS2 cells may be a better alternative; therefore, we compared the plaque forming units of two strains of ZIKV on Vero/TMPRSS2 cells to those produced by Vero cells.

Article Synopsis
  • * A novel bacteriophage, vB_EcoP_PW8 (phage vECPW8), was isolated that effectively targets multidrug-resistant APEC, showing high rates of bacterial lysis, stability under various conditions, and strong antibacterial properties in laboratory tests.
  • * Genome analysis of phage vECPW8 revealed it has a safe, linear genome without harmful genes, and it effectively reduces biofilm formation, making it a promising candidate for treating MDR APEC infections in poultry.

Misprocessing of amyloid precursor protein (APP) is one of the major causes of Alzheimer's disease. APP comprises a large extracellular region, a single transmembrane helix and a short cytoplasmic tail containing an NPxY motif (normally referred to as the YENPTY motif). Talins are synaptic scaffold proteins that connect the cytoskeletal machinery to the plasma membrane via binding NPxY motifs in the cytoplasmic tail of integrins.

Aims: Determine efficacy of an aqueous photocatalytic disinfection system, photoClO2, against two human norovirus surrogates [feline calicivirus (FCV) and Tulane virus (TuV)] and Clostridioides difficile endospores on stainless steel and nylon carpet.

Methods And Results: The photoClO2 system was first optimized with 1% sodium chlorite (NaClO2) and 10 ppm Eosin Y to produce 60.64 ppm ClO2/min in a 4.
