Material Characteristics of Compressed Dry Masonry Made of Medium-Size Elements with Perlite Aggregate.

Materials (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Building Structures, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Silesian University of Technology, 44-100 Gliwice, Poland.

Dry masonry is a type of construction that is nowadays used to a limited extent in the construction sector, including the housing sector. A lack of codified computational methods enabling engineers to design consciously is one of the factors limiting the development of dry walls. This article presents results from testing an innovative solution for dry masonry made of medium-size elements with expanded perlite aggregate.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are not recommended for use against pneumonia in humans, but are commonly utilised against bovine respiratory disease. This study aimed to determine if the use of NSAIDs in the early phase of bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV)-infection limits pulmonary inflammation. Four to nine-week old calves were infected with BRSV by aerosol and were treated with either meloxicam intravenously on day (D)4 (n = 5, MEL), acetylsalicylat-DL-lysin intravenously on D4 and D5 (n = 5, ASA), or were left untreated as controls (n = 5, CTR).

Profiling Cas9- and Cas12a-induced mutagenesis in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Plant J

September 2024

Department of Plant Sciences, Institute of Biology, Leiden University, Leiden, BE, 2333, the Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • CRISPR technology helps scientists make precise changes in DNA, and understanding how cells repair broken DNA is important for this process.
  • Two important tools, Cas9 and Cas12a, are used for editing genes in plants, and they work a little differently when they create DNA breaks.
  • Both tools can cause mutations in similar ways, but they have different effects on how DNA is repaired, showing that either can be used effectively for engineering plants.

Theta-mediated end joining (TMEJ) is critical for survival of cancer cells when other DNA double-stranded break repair pathways are impaired. Human DNA polymerase theta (Pol θ) can extend ssDNA oligonucleotides, but little is known about preferred substrates and mechanism. We show that Pol θ can extend both ssDNA and RNA substrates by unimolecular stem-loop synthesis initiated by only two 3' terminal base pairs.

Structural morphing in the viral portal vertex of bacteriophage lambda.

J Virol

May 2024

State Key Laboratory of Membrane Biology, Beijing Frontier Research Center for Biological Structure, School of Life Sciences, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Unlabelled: The portal protein of tailed bacteriophage plays essential roles in various aspects of capsid assembly, motor assembly, genome packaging, connector formation, and infection processes. After DNA packaging is complete, additional proteins are assembled onto the portal to form the connector complex, which is crucial as it bridges the mature head and tail. In this study, we report high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of the portal vertex from bacteriophage lambda in both its prohead and mature virion states.
