A new method to arrest the unremitting progression of hydrofluoric acid burns, which occurs in the absence of appropriate therapy, is described. The treatment consists of repeated perfusions of calcium gluconate into one of the arteries supplying the affected areas. To date 11 patients have been treated in the described manner, and the therapy brought about recovery in all cases, with little loss of tissue or function.

Investigation of Er-Doped BaF Single Crystals for Infrared Emission and Photovoltaic Efficiency Enhancement.

Luminescence

January 2025

Department of Physics, IMN, Universidad de La Laguna, San Cristobal de La Laguna, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain.

Er-doped BaF single crystals were investigated with two primary aims: first, to probe the infrared emissions from the I level (around 1.0 μm) under 1500-nm excitation and, second, to use the crystal to enhance the efficiency of silicon-based solar cells through upconversion mechanism. Upon excitation at 1500 nm, the upconversion emission spectrum of the Er-doped BaF single crystals, recorded in the range of 480-1080 nm, exhibited two well-structured visible bands at 538 and 650 nm, along with a strong near infrared emission at 971 nm.

Objective: To investigate the education, knowledge and behaviour of Italian dentists regarding Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF).

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to December 2022, through an online survey linked to an online continuing medical education (CME) course sent to Italian dentists. A priori power analysis estimated the necessary sample to be 1480 dentists with an anticipated frequency of 50% and a power of 99.

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry, Shanxi Bethune Hospital, Shanxi Academy of Medical Sciences, Tongji Shanxi Hospital, Third Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, Taiyuan, China.

Two novel nitrogen hybrid fluorescent sensors based on the ESIPT mechanism were successfully synthesized for the detection of fluoride ions (F), and they exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity with a fast response. The detection limits even reach the parts per billion level. With the addition of F, both sensors showed a ratiometric fluorescence change with a large Stokes shift.

Fabrication of hierarchical sapphire nanostructures using ultrafast laser induced morphology change.

Nanotechnology

January 2025

Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin, 204 E. Dean Keeton St., Austin, Texas, 78712-1139, UNITED STATES.

Sapphire is an attractive material in photonic, optoelectronic, and transparent ceramic applications that stand to benefit from surface functionalization effects stemming from micro/nanostructures. Here we investigate the use of ultrafast lasers for fabricating nanostructures in sapphire by exploring the relationship between irradiation parameters, morphology change, and selective etching. In this approach an ultrafast laser pulse is focused on the sapphire substrate to change the crystalline morphology to amorphous or polycrystalline, which is characterized by examining different vibrational modes using Raman spectroscopy.
