Background: In Hong Kong, breast cancer is the commonest female cancer. In addition to intrinsic risk factors that cannot be modified, other factors may be potentially modifiable. The objective of this report was to determine modifiable risk factors in association with breast cancer among Chinese women in our locality.

During nervous system development, diverse types of neurons and glia are sequentially generated by self-renewing neural stem cells (NSCs). Temporal changes in gene expression within NSCs are thought to regulate neural diversity; however, the mechanisms regulating the timing of these temporal gene transitions remain poorly understood. type II NSCs, like human outer radial glia, divide to self-renew and generate intermediate neural progenitors, amplifying and diversifying the population of neurons innervating the central complex, a brain region required for sensorimotor coordination.

Unlabelled: The Sarm1 NAD hydrolase drives neurodegeneration in many contexts, but how Sarm1 activity is regulated remains poorly defined. Using CRISPR/Cas9 screening, we found loss of VHL suppressed Sarm1-mediated cellular degeneration. VHL normally promotes O -dependent constitutive ubiquitination and degradation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1 (HIF-1), but during hypoxia, HIF-1 is stabilized and regulates gene expression.

Hyperhomocysteinemia-associated Thrombosis in Patients With Pernicious Anemia.

J Community Hosp Intern Med Perspect

January 2025

Section of Benign Hematology, The University of Texas, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, USA.

Introduction: Cobalamin deficiency (CD) due to pernicious anemia (PA) leads to hyperhomocystinemia, a risk factor for thrombosis. However, the clinical presentations and outcomes of hyperhomocystinemia-associated thrombosis (HAT) are not fully understood.

Methods: We undertook a literature search using PUBMED, SCOPUS and WEB OF SCIENCE databases for the terms "pernicious anemia AND thrombosis", "pernicious anemia AND embolism", "pernicious anemia AND thromboembolism", "autoimmune gastritis AND thrombosis", "autoimmune gastritis AND embolism", "autoimmune gastritis AND thromboembolism" through January 2024 and reviewed the published literature.

The ecophysiological and ecohydrological impacts of climate change and progressively increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO) concentration on agroecosystems are not well understood compared to the forest ecosystems. In this study, we utilized the presence of old apple and pear trees in the alpine valleys of Northern Italy (maintained for cultural heritage purposes) to investigate climate-scale physiological responses. We developed long-term tree-ring stable isotopic records (δC and δO) from apple (1976-2021) and pear trees (1943-2021).
