Although both male and female mice of different ages expelled surgically implanted glass beads with diameters of 1 mm and 0.5 mm within 5 weeks in comparable numbers, urinary stones formed in relation to these implanted beads more frequently in male mice than in females. This stone formation in male mice may be a consequence of the relatively high mucoprotein content in the urine of the male mouse.

New evidence for early Indian Ocean trade routes into the South African interior.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

February 2025

Cultural Heritage Unit, Conservation Services Division, South African National Parks, Pretoria 0002, South Africa.

The rise and spread of ancient Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) trade networks profoundly impacted southern Africa. Control over this trade played a critical role in the rise and maintenance of complex societies of the second millennium CE such as Mapungubwe and Great Zimbabwe. While the African origins of this trade lie in the first millennium CE, understanding its earliest phases and subsequent development in the far south has been hampered by a general paucity of research.

Microfluidic Integration of Magnetically Functionalized Microwires for Flow Cytometry Protein Quantification.

Materials (Basel)

January 2025

Life Sciences Division, National Research Council of Canada, 75 de Mortagne Boulevard, Boucherville, QC J4B 6Y4, Canada.

A novel approach to protein quantification utilizing a microfluidic platform activated by a magnetic assembly of functionalized magnetic beads around soft magnetic capture centers is presented. Functionalized magnetic beads, known for their high surface area and facile manipulation under external magnetic fields, are injected inside microfluidic channels and immobilized magnetically on the surface of glass-coated soft magnetic microwires placed along the symmetry axis of these channels. A fluorescent (Cy5) immunomagnetic sandwich ELISA is then performed by sequentially flowing the sample and all necessary reagents in the microfluidic channels.

Investigating the application of novel filling materials in Vertical Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands for the treatment of anaerobic effluents originating from domestic wastewater.

J Environ Manage

January 2025

Sanitary Engineering Laboratory, Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering, School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, 9 Iroon Polytechniou St., Zographou Campus, 15773, Athens, Greece.

Vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands (VSSF CWs) were employed to investigate the use of biochar that could be produced with local agricultural biomass through pyrolysis, recycled glass from local recycling companies and gel beads with decreased packing volume and shipping cost as substrate alternatives to sand. The materials were assessed in terms of granulometry, porosity, adsorption capacity and hydraulic conductivity and were used for the treatment of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor, treating domestic wastewater, effluent. Granulometry was a major factor impacting TSS removal that ranged from 81% ± 10% to 97% ± 2%.

Noise in the immunohematological investigations can be described as a false reactivity of red blood cells (RBCs) in serologic testing that is not related to the interaction of RBC antigens and antibodies that the test system is intended to detect. These false-positive reactions can cause confusion during the cross-matching and RBC antibody screening and may result in delays in patient transfusion. Although these antibodies are predominantly clinically insignificant, proper laboratory work-up is indicated to avoid misidentification of a clinically significant antibody as a noise.

Cucumber () trichomes play a critical role in resisting external biological and abiotic stresses. Glandular trichomes are particularly significant as they serve as sites for the synthesis and secretion of secondary metabolites, while non-glandular trichomes are pivotal for determining the appearance quality of cucumbers. However, current methods for separating trichomes encounter challenges such as low efficiency and insufficient accuracy, limiting their applicability in multi-omics sequencing studies.
