Background And Aim: Endoscopic assessment of mucosal healing in ulcerative colitis (UC) is increasingly accepted as a measure of disease activity, therapeutic goal, and the key prognostic indicator. While regular endoscopy evaluates appearance of the mucosal surface, confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) enables in vivo visualization of subepithelial mucosa at 1000× magnification during ongoing endoscopy. Our aims were to determine using CLE whether endoscopically normal appearing colonic mucosa in patients with UC in remission (UC-IR) has fully regenerated mucosal structures, resolved inflammation, and to identify the mechanisms.

Vascular anomalies are frequently encountered in abdomen. But they are usually asymptomatic and diagnosed accidently during angiography or surgery leading into severe complications. Thus knowledge of angioarchitecture in abdomen, whether normal or variant, is considered prerequisite for successful, uncomplicated surgeries and interventional radiology.

The etiology and the pathogenesis of the chronic inflammatory bowel diseases known as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis have not been defined. Therefore, in this study the main emphasis was placed on description of the pathologic anatomy. Disturbed blood supply and vascular disorders have been discussed as etiopathogenetic factors.

Massive hemorrhage from diverticular disease of the colon is a very difficult problem in abdominal emergency surgery. The pathogenesis of bleeding colonic diverticulosis is strictly correlated to the angioarchitecture of the colonic diverticular wall. Here the vasa recta penetrate the colonic wall from the serosa to the submucosa through connective tissue septa.

Vascular changes in resected bowels of Crohn's disease were examined angiographically, microangiographically, micro-preparatorily and histologically. The proper angioarchitecture of the small and the large bowel is being destroyed in the course of the ongoing inflammatory process. Dilated capillaries, destruction of the primary angioarchitecture and its replacement by an irregular, partially bizarre pattern of scar vessels with bundling of the unchanged Vasa recta as varying vessel diameters caused by obliterating secondary fibroses can be seen in advanced Crohn's disease.
