The structure of transmissive resistance to antibiotics was studied in 1260 Salmonella strains of 57 serotypes and R-plasmid resistance was found in the representatives of 13 (31.6 per cent) serotypes. The transmissive resistance correlated with multiple resistance to 4--10 antibiotics. The rate of occurrence of the transmissive R-plasmids was markedly higher in the bipathogenic serotypes. The structure of the R-plasmid resistance was most pronounced and diverse in S. typhimurium. It was usually revealed simultaneously with registration of the hospital infection. The plasmid with the determinants of resistance to erythromycin and benzylpenicillin was found only in this serotype. The nature of resistance and spectrum of transmissive resistance to antibiotics in Salmonella may serve as an additional epidemiological feature of the strains.

Copper is frequently found in drinking water due to its presence in the natural environment and the widespread usage of copper pipes. This toxic metal has a well-known antimicrobial activity, an activity harnessed in copper‑silver ionization (CSI) to eliminate the opportunistic pathogen Legionella pneumophila from engineered water systems. Despite utilizing the antimicrobial properties of copper in Legionella control, little is known about how copper containing environments affect L.

High-Performance Radiative Cooling Sunscreen.

Nano Lett

November 2024

Beijing Key Laboratory of Green Chemical Reaction Engineering and Technology, Department of Chemical Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Radiative cooling (RC) sunscreen is a new, energy-efficient cooling technology that helps keep skin comfortable and protects against UV radiation.
  • It has low UV transmissivity (4.86%), high solar reflectivity (90.19%), and high mid-infrared emissivity (92.09%), allowing it to cool skin by 2.3-6.1 °C better than regular sunscreens.
  • The RC sunscreen offers good durability and performance, with benefits like UV stability, water resistance, and biocompatibility, suggesting it could be a strong contender in the sunscreen market.

Free radical copolymerization of 1,3-cyclooctadiene with maleic anhydride or -substituted maleimides: a simple way to obtain high-performance transparent plastics.

Chem Commun (Camb)

November 2024

State Key Laboratory of Biobased Transportation Fuel Technology, International Research Center for X Polymers, Department of Polymer Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, 310058, China.

Herein, we report the free radical copolymerization of 1,3-cyclooctadiene and maleic anhydride or -substituted maleimides. The obtained alternating copolymers have a fine-tuned (ranging from 62 °C to 300 °C) and excellent thermal resistance and optical properties (up to 90% transmissivity).

The development of modern optoelectronic devices increases the need for lightweight and flexible transparent conductors. It is thus essential to develop new eco-friendly materials that can be easily processed for the fabrication of such devices. For this purpose, the synthesis of self-doped, highly conducting, transmissive, and water-processable polythiophene derivatives was performed via the direct heteroarylation polymerization method and a protection/deprotection strategy.

The diagnostics of X-ray beam properties has a critical importance at the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser facility. Besides existing diagnostic components, utilization of a diamond sensor was proposed to achieve radiation-hard, non-invasive beam position and pulse energy measurements for hard X-rays. In particular, with very hard X-rays, diamond-based sensors become a useful complement to gas-based devices which lose sensitivity due to significantly reduced gas cross-sections.
