Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms occur frequently in pregnant women, resulting in poor quality of life. These patients frequently require co-management with the obstetrician and a physician/GI specialist. The causation is complex and multifactorial.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) represents a common complication during pregnancy that affects fetoplacental development. We demonstrated the existence of impaired trophoblast syncytialization under hyperglycemic conditions. However, the exact mechanism remains unknown.

Objectives: Numerous animal and epidemiologic studies have demonstrated a positive association between maternal obesity in pregnancy and obesity in offspring. The biologic mechanisms of this association remain under investigation. One proposed mechanism includes fetoplacental endothelial dysfunction secondary to inflammation.

Gestational exposure to the anticonvulsant drug valproic acid (VPA) is associated with congenital malformations and neurodevelopmental disorders through its action as a histone deacetylase inhibitor. VPA can elicit placental toxicity and affect placental growth and development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of maternal exposure to VPA on the mouse placenta following exposure on gestational day (GD) 13 since previous studies have shown that mice exposed at this time during gestation give birth to offspring with an autism spectrum disorder-like phenotype.

Introduction: The transplacental passage of cells between a mother and her fetus, known as microchimerism, is a less studied process during pregnancy. The frequency of maternal microchimeric cells in fetal tissues in physiological pregnancies and mechanisms responsible for transplacental cell trafficking are poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the placental trafficking of maternal peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) using human ex vivo placenta perfusion.
