Serum CS/DS, IGF-1, and IGFBP-3 as Biomarkers of Cartilage Remodeling in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Implications.

Biomolecules

November 2024

Department of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Diagnostics, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sosnowiec, Medical University of Silesia, ul. Jedności 8, 41-200 Sosnowiec, Poland.

Cartilage destruction in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is diagnosed, often too late, on basis of clinical evaluation and radiographic imaging. This case-control study investigated serum chondroitin/dermatan sulfate (CS/DS) as a potential biochemical marker of cartilage metabolism, aiming to improve early diagnosis and precision treatment for JIA. We also measured the levels of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and insulin-like growth factor-binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) (using ELISA methods) in JIA patients ( = 55) both before and after treatment (prednisone, sulfasalazine, methotrexate, administered together), and analyzed their relationships with CS/DS levels.

A 79-year old Caucasian male with metastatic hormone refractory prostate cancer and bilateral nephrostomy was admitted to the emergency department due to 4-day bloody urethral discharge, weakness and dizziness. The patient was treated with the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone-antagonist and abiraterone acetate plus prednisone, dabigatran 150 mg bid (for atrial fibrillation and coronary heart disease) and 5-aminosalicylic acid for the management of mild ulcerative colitis. Imaging revealed bladder overdistention and blood analysis low levels of hematocrit (HCT) and hemoglobin (HGB) (HCT, 22%; HGB, 7.

Serum Androgens as Predictive Biomarkers: Results From a Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Enzalutamide and Abiraterone Acetate in Men With Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer.

Clin Genitourin Cancer

December 2024

Department of Urology, Copenhagen University Hospital, Herlev and Gentofte Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark; Department of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between baseline androgen concentrations and outcomes in men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) treated with first-line enzalutamide or abiraterone acetate plus prednisone (AAP).

Materials And Methods: We previously randomized men with mCRPC to enzalutamide or AAP to compare side-effects and measured androgen concentrations. In this post-hoc analysis, patients were grouped in quartiles (Q) based on their serum androgen values.

Sea-fan retinal neovascularization associated with rickettsial retinitis: a case report.

BMC Ophthalmol

September 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Fattouma Bourguiba University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, University of Monastir, 1st June Street, Monastir, 5000, Tunisia.

Background: Rickettsial disease has been commonly associated with retinitis, retinal vasculitis, and optic nerve involvement, but the development of retinal neovascularization has been very rarely reported. We herein describe a case of rickettsial retinitis complicated with the development of sea-fan retinal neovascularization documented with multimodal imaging, including fundus photography, SS-OCT, fluorescein angiography, and SS-OCT angiography.

Case Presentation: A 26-year-old female with a history of fever one week earlier presented with sudden decreased vision in the left eye.

In the recent EULAR recommendations, ultrasound examination is now recommended as a first-line imaging test in all patients with suspected giant cell arteritis (GCA) and the axillary arteries should be included in the standard exam. As an alternative to ultrasound evaluation, cranial and extracranial arteries can be examined using FDG-PET or MRI. The aim of our study was to observe in a retrospective case series whether there is a correlation between biomarkers and imaging activity in a population of patients followed in real life with GCA treated with prednisone (PDN) and tocilizumab (TCZ).
