Background: Functional hypothalamic amenorrhea (FHA) and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are pathologies most common in women of reproductive age. Menstrual irregularities (oligo/amenorrhea) are the most common symptom of these diseases. FHA develops against the background of stress or excessive physical exertion, and is characterized by inhibition of neuroendocrine regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis with a subsequent decrease in the production of sex steroids.

Objective: Researchers are increasingly interested in exploring the role of the menopausal transition in eating disorder risk. We recently embarked on studies of this critical life phase and encountered significant challenges in assessing menopausal status that limited our ability to test study hypotheses. This Research Forum describes these challenges and presents descriptive data on staging accuracy as well as recommendations for improving assessments that can advance research in this critical area of women's health.

Background/objectives: Iron deficiency has been suggested as a potential mechanism for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) development due to involvement in neurotransmitter synthesis and transporter expression. As iron deficiency is particularly common in women of reproductive age, often due to heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB), we aimed to explore the relationship between iron deficiency, HMB and ADHD in women.

Methods: We screened women (18-49 years) at university and local sporting events in Western Australia.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-shortening genetic disorder, caused by mutations in the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein that regulates ion and fluid transport in epithelial tissue. Female CF patients face considerable fertility challenges, with higher prevalence of deficient fertility compared to healthy women. Not much is known about the underlying causes.
