This study examined the energy-dependent physiological responses, including stress, innate immune, and antioxidant systems, as well as indicators of energy mobilization, in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus) exposed to intermittent cold, aiming to assess the correlations between these responses. The fish were acclimated to 28 °C, divided into two groups, a control group maintained at 28 °C, and another exposed to 16 °C for two 24 h periods with a 5-day interval between them. The fish were sampled at six time points: baseline (after acclimatization to 28 °C), 24 h after the 1st exposure to 16 °C, after 5 days of recovery at 28 °C, 24 h after the 2nd exposure to 16 °C, and after 24 and 48 h of recovery at 28 °C.

In several mammalian species, the measurement of mitochondrial oxygen consumption (MITOX) under different metabolic conditions has demonstrated a positive correlation with sperm motility and may be a sensitive indicator of mitochondrial health. In general, the maintenance of sperm motility and many key sperm functions and fertilizing events are heavily energy-dependent processes, and some species-specific substrate preferences exist. Although canine sperm have been known to undergo capacitation and maintain motility with supplementation of a wide range of energy substrates, the relationship between mitochondrial function, and the maintenance of oxidative metabolism and sperm motility remain unclear.

Disagreements extend to the nature of oxygen bioavailability and whether oxygen usually limits growth under warming, explaining smaller adult size. The regulation of mitochondria function and health is a central node in tissue maintenance, ageing as well as the pathogenesis of various diseases. However, the maintenance of an active mitochondrial functional state and its quality control mechanisms remain incompletely understood. By studying mice with a mitochondria-targeted reporter that shifts its fluorescence from "green" to "red" with time (MitoTimer), we found MitoTimer fluorescence spectrum was heavily dependent on the oxidative metabolic state in the skeletal muscle fibers.
