Conclusion: These data show that pure pancreatic juice of AICP patients has a markedly defective antibacterial activity. This finding might be of potential clinical interest in the understanding of the pathophysiology of the disease.
Background: The aim of the present study was to test the antibacterial activity of pure pancreatic juice in patients with chronic pancreatitis.

Direct pancreatic function tests, such as the secretin-pancreozymin test and the Lundh test, are--by direct measurement of the contents of duodenal secretion following exogenous (hormonal) or endogenous (test meal) stimulation--the best way to assess exocrine pancreatic function. However, these tests are time-consuming, invasive, and expensive, and therefore their use is limited to specialized centers only. Several studies have shown that indirect pancreatic function tests are a practicable alternative to direct pancreatic function tests for diagnosing exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.

The results obtained were correlated with those from 11 normal persons (controls). Out of 76 examinees the disorders of exocrinous performance of the pancreatic gland were revealed in 75 persons.

One of these errors is neglected analysis of the basal secretion, that may be informative in a number of cases; the other, resultant from the first one, is comparison of the stimulated secretion with but one basal period sample, that eventually leads to inaccurate results. An adequate picture of the exocrine pancreatic secretion may be obtained if the methods of investigation are changed, i.

In order to investigate whether the human pancreas is capable of adapting to a diet with high-carbohydrate, low-fat, and normal protein content, 10 healthy volunteers were given a defined elemental diet (60% of calories as carbohydrates, 22% as fat, and 18% as protein) for 7 d. For the next 7 d they received an elemental diet with a further increased carbohydrate content (76% of calories) and a decreased fat content (10% of calories). A complete secretin-pancreozymin test was carried out at the end of the first wk and at d 14.
