Concomitant formation of protocells and prebiotic compounds under a plausible early Earth atmosphere.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

January 2025

Laboratory of Crystallographic Studies, Instituto Andaluz de Ciencias de la Tierra, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científica, Armilla 18100, Spain.

Revealing the origin of life and unambiguously detecting fossil remains of the earliest organisms are closely related aspects of the same scientific research. The synthesis of prebiotic molecular building blocks of life and the first compartmentalization into protocells have been considered two events apart in time, space, or both. We conducted lightning experiments in borosilicate reactors filled with a mixture of gases mimicking plausible geochemical conditions of early Earth.

ConspectusOrigin of Life research is a fast growing field of study with each year bringing new breakthroughs. Recent discoveries include novel syntheses of life's building blocks, mechanisms of activation and interaction between molecules, and newly identified environments that provide promising conditions for these syntheses and mechanisms. Even with these new findings, firmly grounded in rigorous laboratory experiments, researchers often find themselves uncertain about how to apply them.

Understanding geochemical source-sink relationships is an important aspect for developing background values of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in a lake basin. This approach was studied in the Araguaia belt of Amazonia, Brazil. A total of 96 sediments (from 13 sediment core, low-altitude lateritic plateaus; LA2-LA14), 36 surface soils, and 19 catchment crusts/rocks were collected in 2022-2023 and chemical analysis of these samples was performed in the fine fraction (<177 μm) using XRF and ICP-MS.

The geochemical analysis of Gafsa rock phosphate (GRP) revealed relatively high concentrations of essential plant minerals and trace heavy metals (HMs). Environmental contamination factors indicated moderate to very strong HM contamination due to GRP soil amendment. The potential use of the Serratia plymuthica BMA1 strain, which is known for its ability to solubilize GRP, to enhance mineral nutrition in Vicia faba L.

Calcification and ecological depth preferences of the planktonic foraminifer in the central Atlantic.

R Soc Open Sci

December 2024

Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3AN, UK.

Understanding the controls behind the calcification and distribution of planktonic foraminifera in the modern ocean is important when these organisms are used for palaeoceanographic reconstructions. This study combines previously reported shell mass data with new shell geochemistry, light microscopy and X-ray micro-computed tomography analyses to dissect various parameters of shells from surface sediments, investigating the factors influencing their biometry. The goal is to understand which aspects of the marine environment are critical for the calcification and vertical distribution of this species.
