An improved oxygen availability in air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures of enterocytes of the small intestine seems to be primarily responsible for morphological, metabolic, and functional changes. Intestinal porcine epithelial cells 1 (IPEC-1) are less investigated and are rarely used as model for intestinal barrier but showed a profound change of cell shape during ALI cultivation. We aim to answer the following question: Are the observed morphological effects accompanied by changes in metabolic function? A microarray analysis of submerged culture (SMC) and ALI cultures identified 830 significantly regulated genes.

Simultaneous MR-PET-EEG (magnetic resonance imaging - positron emission tomography - electroencephalography), a new tool for the investigation of neuronal networks in the human brain, is presented here for the first time. It enables the assessment of molecular metabolic information with high spatial and temporal resolution in a given brain simultaneously. Here, we characterize the brain's default mode network (DMN) in healthy male subjects using multimodal fingerprinting by quantifying energy metabolism via 2- [F]fluoro-2-desoxy-D-glucose PET (FDG-PET), the inhibition - excitation balance of neuronal activation via magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS), its functional connectivity via fMRI and its electrophysiological signature via EEG.

Aims: The intention of this work was to lift saponin supported tumor targeted therapies onto the next level by using targeted toxins in nude mice xenotransplant models.
Materials & Methods: Combined application of dianthin coupled to EGF and saponin SO-1861 was tested in a xenograft model of colon carcinoma. In vitro cytotoxicity was tested in real-time in NIH3T3 cells (no human EGF receptor expression), HER14 and human colon carcinoma HCT116 (both EGF receptor overexpressing) cells.

Background: Diagnosis of prosthetic vascular graft infections is a clinical challenge, and surgical therapy is associated with comorbidity. Therefore, accurate diagnostic methods are required for their optimal management.
Methods: A 61-year-old-patient presented with erysipelas of the right lower limb 7 months after receiving a hybrid femoropopliteal bypass composed of a saphenous vein distally and external supported polytetrafluoroethylene proximally.

Cytosolic free calcium concentration ([Ca(2+)]i) is a central signalling element for the maintenance of endothelial barrier function. Under physiological conditions, it is controlled within narrow limits. Metabolic inhibition during ischemia/reperfusion, however, induces [Ca(2+)]i overload, which results in barrier failure.
