D-allulose enhances lipid oxidation in HepG2 cells via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα).

Biochim Biophys Acta Mol Cell Biol Lipids

January 2025

Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, University of Florida Jacksonville College of Medicine, Jacksonville, FL 32209, United States of America.

Lipid accumulation in hepatocytes in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) is attributed partly to loss of insulin-responsiveness and/or an increased pro-inflammatory state. Since the rare sugar D-allulose has insulin mimetic and anti-inflammatory properties, its effects on lipid accumulation in liver-derived cells was tested. In HepG2 cells exposed to 200 μM oleic acid for 72 h, D-allulose treatment decreased intracellular lipid accumulation with an IC = 0.

The effects of maternal body weight on iodine concentration in breast milk and cord blood and infant growth.

J Dev Orig Health Dis

January 2025

Department of Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Health Sciences, Ankara University, Keçiören, Ankara, Turkey.

Breast milk (BM) is the only source of iodine and bioactive compounds that influence growth and development in infants. The content of BM may be influenced by maternal body mass index (BMI). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal weight on BM and cord blood iodine concentrations, growth-related hormones, infant anthropometric measurements.

Aims: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is closely associated with metabolic disorders such as insulin resistance and obesity, but the role of adipogenesis in its pathophysiology remains unclear. This study investigates the role of adipogenesis in PCOS development and evaluates whether hyperoside (HPS), an anti-adipogenic herbal compound, can improve PCOS by inhibiting adipogenesis.

Main Methods: A combination of in vivo and in vitro models was used to assess the impact of HPS on ovarian function, insulin resistance, and adipogenesis.

Background: Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) can enter patients' circulation through exogenous sources, such as enteral nutrition formulae. Circulating AGEs, specifically carboxymethyllysine, can promote insulin resistance and activation of pro-inflammatory pathways leading to oxidative stress, cell death, and organ failure. Suboptimal kidney function increases the risk of elevated circulating AGEs because levels are controlled through urinary excretion.
