Background: Dexamethasone has proven life-saving in severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and COVID-19 cases. However, its systemic administration is accompanied by serious side effects. Inhalation delivery of dexamethasone (Dex) faces challenges such as low lung deposition, brief residence in the respiratory tract, and the pulmonary mucus barrier, limiting its clinical use.

Compartmentalized models with coupled catalytic networks are considered as "protocells" in the context of research related to the origin of life. To model the kinetics of a simple cellular uptake-metabolism process, we use a compartmentalized protocell system that combines liposome-encapsulated intravesicular reporter pairs with co-encapsulated enzymes to monitor the membrane transport of a substrate (analyte uptake) and its subsequent enzymatic reaction inside the vesicles (metabolism to the product). The intravesicular chemosensing ensembles consist of the macrocycles cucurbit[7]uril or p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene and matching fluorescent dyes to set up suitable reporter pairs.

6PPD-quinone (6PPD-Q) as a derivative of the rubber antioxidant N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), is attracting intensive attention due to the significant hazard to ecosystems. However, the effective management of this type of contaminant has been scarcely reported. Hydrangea-like hollow O, Cl-codoped graphite-phase carbon nitride microspheres (HHCN), featuring open pores were readily prepared by molecular self-assembly and utilized to address 6PPD-Q in an aqueous system for the first time.

Article Synopsis
  • Na-Se batteries are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries due to their high capacity and natural abundance, but face challenges like volume expansion and polyselenide shuttling.
  • The research introduces a novel Se/HPC (Se encapsulated in hierarchically porous carbon) that effectively contains Se, mitigates expansion issues, and enhances charge transfer, resulting in improved electrochemical performance.
  • The study also highlights the beneficial Se─C bond for sodium adsorption and diffusion, suggesting future directions for designing advanced electrode materials using MOF-derived structures.

Polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWEs) are a critical technology for efficient hydrogen production to decarbonize fuels and industrial feedstocks. To make hydrogen cost-effective, the overpotentials across the cell need to be decreased and platinum-group metal loading reduced. One overpotential that needs to be better understood is due to mass transport limitations from bubble formation within the porous transport layer (PTL) and anode catalyst layer (ACL), which can lead to a reduction in performance at typical operating current densities.
