Knowledge of blood triacylglycerol (TAG) species is essential to clarify the physiological functions of individual TAG molecules and also to develop potential biomarkers for related diseases. Commonly, lipid samples prepared by organic liquid-liquid extraction contain complex components, thus cannot be directly characterized by mass spectrometry (MS) and often require an additional purification step. Here, we described a laser desorption ionization - mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) method that utilized aggregated graphene oxide (AGO) as both lipid extractant and MS matrix (AGOLDI-MS), to characterize and quantify plasma TAG species without the use of harmful solvent or complex separation step.

The incidence of obesity and related metabolic diseases is increasing globally. Current medical treatments often fail to halt the progress of such disturbances, and plant-derived polyphenols are increasingly being investigated as a possible way to provide safe and effective complementary therapy. Rooibos (Aspalathus linearis) is a rich source of polyphenols without caloric and/or stimulant components.

Role of ageing and coronary atherosclerosis in the development of cardiac fibrosis in the rabbit.

Cardiovasc Res

December 2004

Department of Biopathology and Image Diagnostics, Anatomic Pathology Institute, Tor Vergata University of Rome, Via della Ricerca Scientifica, 00133 Rome, Italy.

Objective: Myocardial fibrosis contributes to the impairing of cardiac function and characterizes ageing, but is also a consequence of atherosclerotic ischemic disease. Since atherosclerosis is a slow progressive disease, which prevails in elderly populations, the aim of this study was to distinguish the contribution of ageing and atherosclerosis to cardiac fibrosis.

Methods: Coronary atherosclerosis was induced in 5-6-year-old rabbits by a hyperlipemic diet for 9 months.
