Chronic hepatitis viral infection, alcoholic intoxication, and obesity cause liver fibrosis, which progresses to decompensated liver cirrhosis, a disease for which medical demands cannot be met. Since there are currently no approved anti-fibrotic therapies for established liver fibrosis, the development of novel modalities is required to improve patient prognosis. In this study, we clarified the anti-fibrotic effects of cell sheets produced from human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) incubated on a temperature-sensitive culture dish with the chemical compound IC-2.

Examinations of brain of rats intoxicated with hexachlorophene or acrylamide with ultrahigh-field (4.7 T) proton magnetic resonance (MR) showed alterations consistent with clinical pictures in humans and morphological findings in experimental animals. On the other hand, conventional biochemical analyses have revealed that ethylene oxide, methyl bromide, and acrylamide inhibit creatine kinase (CK; an enzyme catalyzing the reaction: ATP+creatine<-->ADP+phosphocreatine) activities in the brain of animals.

Nerve edema is a common response to the nerve injury seen in many peripheral neuropathies and is an important component of Wallerian degeneration. However, independent pathologic effects of nerve edema that aggravate or induce nerve injury extend the role of edema beyond that of an epiphenomenon of injury. New insights into the mechanism and impact of nerve edema come largely from animal models.

Effects of repeated administration of hexachlorophene (HCP) on the food consumption, body and liver weights, liver somatic indices and hepatic levels of the free amino acids and amino acid-enzyme activities have been studied. View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe antioxidants butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and ethoxyquin protected rats against intoxication and mortality normally produced by hexachlorophene (HCP, 100 mg/kg). BHT also prevented the elevation of cerebrospinal fluid pressure, a central nervous system effect of HCP poisoning. In addition, both phenobarbital and SKF-525A protected against HCP poisoning, with the barbiturate also offering significant protection against triethyltin.
