The new maintenance engineers become self-taught and learn from daily dedication, from solving repetitive problems, from exchanging experiences with a colleague, from reading a recommended book and little else. Their own experience has been the main reference for maintenance professionals who have not given up and have become experts. And within the maintenance activities, sanitary engineering plays a very important role.

A low oxygen level in solid tumors is behind the modern concept of selective chemotherapy by hypoxia-activated prodrugs, such as heteroleptic complexes of transition metals (cobalt(III), iron(III) or platinum(IV)) with bi- or tetradentate ligands and an anticancer drug molecule as a co-ligand. A series of new cobalt(III) complexes [Co(LR)(esc)]ClO with esculetin (6,7-dihydroxycoumarin) and 2,2'-bipyridines (2,2'-bipy) functionalized by different substituents R were probed in the hypoxia-activated delivery of this model anticancer drug. Their combined study by cyclic voltammetry and NMR spectroscopy allowed identifying linear correlations of the electrochemical reduction potentials and the rate of the hypoxia-activated dissociation of [Co(LR)(esc)]ClO with the Hammett constants of the substituents in 2,2'-bipy ligands.

We describe a workshop that prompts chemistry students in the final 2 years of secondary school to apply their understanding of modern analytical chemistry techniques to a 'real world' example. The scenario used is that of a forensic science laboratory that has been asked to determine the structure of an illicit compound, Revisomed (methamphetamine) being sold as a revision aid, and seized by police. Over the course of an hour, the students use a combination of infrared (IR) spectroscopy, liquid chromatography (LC), high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy data to determine the structure of Revisomed from first principles.

Verdazyls are a fundamental class of stable organic radicals that have been traditionally overshadowed by the more synthetically accessible stable nitroxide radicals. With the advent of enhanced synthetic routes to verdazyls, particularly in recent years, these systems are now poised to realise their potential in a range of applications across emerging technologies that will be important to addressing challenges faced by modern society. This Concept discusses the enabling properties of a selection of verdazyl-based systems that feature promising applications in energy storage, molecular electronics and magnetic molecules.
