This study has demonstrated that aneurysms occur in about 50 percent of the rat femoral arteries subjected to microvascular anastomosis. These aneurysms are consistent histologically--being characterized by medial necrosis, loss of elastic lamellae, and subintimal hyperplasia. Mechanical trauma is implicated as a factor in their pathogenesis, though further study in necessary to define the exact etiology.

Purpose: This study aims to present our experience with superselective embolization of the anterior spinal artery-bearing segmental artery (ASAbSA) using a microvascular plug (MVP) during the minimally invasive segmental artery coil embolization (MISACE) procedure prior endovascular repair of the thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated all MISACE procedures performed between May 2018 and July 2023, where MVP was deployed into an angiographically confirmed ASAbSA. Data were analyzed regarding interventional details, technical aspects, and safety protocols.

Article Synopsis
  • * A retrospective analysis was conducted on 23 patients who received axolotl dermis patches after surgical procedures, with data collected on demographics, post-surgery complications, and comorbidities affecting wound healing.
  • * Results showed that only 8.7% of patients experienced complications such as infection or wound dehiscence after using the patches, suggesting a promising alternative for chronic wound management.

Proton beam irradiation with anti-VEGF therapy for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy: results of a 24-month, phase II randomized study.

Graefes Arch Clin Exp Ophthalmol

November 2024

Eye Institute and Department of Ophthalmology, Eye & ENT Hospital, Fudan University, 83 Fenyang Road, Shanghai, China.

Purpose: To determine the efficacy and safety of proton beam irradiation (PBI) and anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) therapy for polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV)/ aneurysmal type 1 macular neovascularization (AT1).

Methods: The randomized clinical trial consisted of newly diagnosed active PCV/AT1 patients who were randomized 1:1 to treatment with three initial monthly intravitreal anti-VEGF agent (conbercept) injections with or without single 14 GyE radiation. Subsequent anti-VEGF therapy was given pro re nata.

Article Synopsis
  • A case study is presented involving a 48-year-old woman with pupil-involving third nerve palsy and Terson's syndrome, leading to the discovery of a right posterior communicating artery aneurysm.
  • Terson's syndrome manifested with retinal hemorrhages resembling Roth spots, and the patient maintained full consciousness and no other neurological symptoms.
  • The timely intervention by ophthalmologists was crucial in diagnosing and managing her condition, ultimately requiring a surgical procedure after imaging confirmed the aneurysm.
