One of the unique features of the State University of New York (SUNY) Biomedical Communication Network is the availability of depth-indexed monograph information for on-line retrieval. Approximately 8,000 titles from the Upstate Medical Center Library collection in Syracuse, New York, were indexed in depth, chapter-by-chapter, as to subject content using the control vocabulary Medical Subject Headings. Detailed indexing of monographic conference proceedings was considered of particular importance to the project. This attempt to make monograph literature more readily accessible to medical library patrons is interesting from both a philosophical and a technical point of view. This paper will discuss both of these aspects, giving an overall description of the nature of this innovative project.

Background: Exposure to strong inorganic acid mists (SIAMs) in the workplace has been linked to respiratory tract cancers.

Aims: We conducted a meta-analysis of cohort and case-control studies examining the association between occupational SIAMs and respiratory tract cancers other than laryngeal cancer, which is already established.

Methods: Studies mentioned in the 1992 IARC Monograph on carcinogenicity of SIAMs were combined with later studies identified from a systematic search of Scopus, PubMed and Embase.

Background: PFASs, synthetic chemicals, can be encountered by humans through occupational or environmental exposure, and some reports suggest that they can disrupt endocrine and hormonal activities. In this comprehensive review and meta-analysis, we explored the connection between exposure to PFASs and the risks of breast and female genital cancers.

Methods: We systematically reviewed the literature from IARC Monographs, ATSDR documents, and PubMed (as of January 2024) for cohort, case-control, and ecological studies on PFAS exposure and breast or female genital cancers.
