The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the alpha 1-adrenoceptor antagonist thymoxamine possesses antihistaminic activity in clinical doses in man, as has been reported on the guinea pig ileum in vitro. Five normal subjects were given on three separate occasions intravenous infusions of thymoxamine (0.15 mg kg-1 loading dose followed by 0.

A method for the collection of rabbit nasal washings to analyse outputs of mucous glycoproteins is described. The radiolabels sodium [35S]sulphate and [3H]glucose are bound to the glycoproteins. The release of bound 35S and 3H was enhanced by cervical sympathetic nerve stimulation.

Thymoxamine, suggested by some authors as a useful drug in the asthma therapy associated with beta-adreno-stimulant agents, tested on smooth tracheal muscle of guinea-pig, showed a stronger antihistaminic activity compared to the alpha-adrenolytic action.

On the pharmacology of venous smooth muscle from dog and man.

Changes in tension of spiral strips from canine and human veins induced by various drugs are compared with results from the literature on human veins. The order of potencies of alpha-adrenoceptor stimulating amines (adrenaline greater than noradrenaline greater than dopamine greater than isoprenaline) is similar in human and canine veins. Comparison of the affinities for alpha-adrenoceptors of pharmacologic drugs (thymoxamine, indoramine, clonidine, dihydroergotamine) suggest marked differences between the alpha-adrenoceptors in veins from man and dog.
