Catechol-derived polymers form stable coatings on a wide range of materials including challenging to coat low surface energy polymers. Whether modification of the coating polymer with fluorophilic or hydrophobic groups is a successful approach to further favor the coating of hydrophobic or fluorophilic surfaces with catechol-based polymers remains ambiguous. Herein, we report the effect of a series of catechol-derived polyglycerol (PG)-based coatings and monolayer coatings on the wettability of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polystyrene, and poly(methyl methacrylate) surfaces.

-Iodosuccinimide-promoted cascade reactions of arylidene isoxazolones with amidines in -xylene were accomplished, affording 5-acylimidazoles in good to excellent yields. Interestingly, when the reactions were performed by employing acetonitrile as the solvent, 4-acylimidazoles were efficiently obtained. Mechanistic studies indicate that the formation of imidazolyl and acyl moieties may undergo a spiroannulation-ring opening aromatization-hydrolysis cascade reaction sequence.

Phytoplankton are diverse photosynthetic organisms in estuarine ecosystems and sensitive indicators of environmental changes. This study employed Generalized Additive Model (GAM) to explore the impact of environmental variables on the abundance of six dominant phytoplankton species in the tropical Karanja estuary, India. Data were collected from five sampling stations between January 2022 and March 2023.

Lignin, the most abundant renewable source of aromatic compounds on earth, remains underexploited in traditional biorefining. Fraxetin, a naturally occurring flavonoid, has garnered considerable attention in the scientific community due to its diverse and potent biological activities such as antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neurological protective actions. To enhance the green and value-added utilization of lignin, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was engineered as a cell factory to transform lignin derivatives to produce fraxetin.

Sustainable soil management is essential to conserve soil biodiversity and its provision of vital ecosystem services. The EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 highlights the key role of organic farming and land protection in halting biodiversity loss, including edaphic biodiversity. To assess the effectiveness of the proposed measures, a 1-year study was conducted in spring 2022 to determine the soil quality of three organically managed agroecosystems and four sites for each: arable lands, olive groves, and vineyards in the Conero Park, using the arthropod-based Biological Soil Quality Index (QBS-ar) and also considering soil chemical-physical characteristics.
