A toxicity database of over 157 ionic liquids (ILs) was established on Vibrio fischeri (VF). The database contained mainly monotonic concentration-response relationship, and its application in risk assessment was challenged by potential non-monotonic hormetic effects of ILs. In the present study, the hormetic effects of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium salts ([emim]X, X = BF4, Cl and Br) were confirmed on VF, and biochemical explanations were explored in a time-dependent manner.

This is an extensive study in a defined initiation-promotion hepatocellular carcinoma model of hepatocarcinogenesis (in rats) in which many important marker enzymes and isoenzymes and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine formation have been studied together with two very important cellular proliferating genes, insulin-like growth factor II and c-raf.1, known for their role in hepatocellular cancer development. Supplementation of selenium in the form of selenomethionine (8 ppm) in drinking water daily has been found to be highly effective in reducing cancer incidence in male Sprague-Dawley rats fed 2-acetylaminofluorine (2-AAF) (0.05%) in the basal diet daily for 16 weeks. Selenomethionine treatment before initiation, during initiation or during the selection/promotion phases of hepatocarcinogenesis has been found to be effective in elevating hepatic microsomal cytochrome b5, cytochrome P-450 contents, triphosphopyridine nucleotide-cytochrome c-reductase and cytosolic aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase activities to a statistically significant level measured either in the hyperplastic nodules or in the non-nodular surrounding liver parenchyma compared with 2-AAF control rats.

Sonicates from unstimulated human neutrophils produce no measurable superoxide since the superoxide-generating enzyme, NADPH oxidase, is inactive in these preparations. Previous attempts to activate the oxidase in disrupted cells with conventional neutrophil stimuli have been unsuccessful. This report describes a cell-free system in which arachidonic acid (82 microM) was able to activate superoxide generation that was dependent upon the presence of NADPH and the sonicate.
