Background: N, N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET), an active ingredient prevalent in insect repellents, has its effects on human health under ongoing debate and scrutiny.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between exposure to DEET and arthritis outcomes within the broader adult demographic, leveraging data obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
Methods: 3-diethyl-carbamoyl benzoic acid (DCBA) was used as a specific indicator of DEET exposure.

Contaminants released into the atmosphere that undergo regional and long-range transport can deposit back to Earth through snowfall. When snow melts, these contaminants re-enter the environment, sometimes far from their original emission sources. Here we present the first comprehensive characterization of organic contaminants in snow from North America.

Kunth (Piperaceae) essential oil (EO) was evaluated for its toxicity and repellency against red imported fire ants (RIFA), Buren, and a hybrid (HIFA) of red ( and black ( Forel) imported fire ants. Through bioactivity-guided fractionation, two major components, elemicin and myristicin, were isolated from the EO. Removal of treated sand in a digging bioassay was used as the criterion for repellency.

Imported fire ants are pests of significant importance, especially in the southern United States. We tested (/)-3-butylidenephthalide, a natural compound that was isolated from the ethanolic extract of roots, as a repellent and toxicant against workers of imported fire ants. A series of serial concentrations, starting from 156 µg/g until failure, were tested using digging bioassays.
