Fifteen predominantly alkyl bromide quaternary salts of 1-substituted 4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine and 10 from 3,6-dimethyl-l-phenyltetrahydro-2H-1,3-oxazine were synthesized. None was effective against the parasitic protozoan Eimeria tenella and the helminth trichostrongyle nematode. Nearly all inhibited Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria; maximum efficiency was obtained with nonyl through dodecyl bromide salt derivatives. Antifungal effectiveness paralleled these results. The oxazinium salt analogs were inhibitory in an in vitro peridontal microorganism screen. The decyl bromide derivative at 0.05% in drinking water prevented dental plaque and reduced calculus deposition in rats but not in hamsters fed cariogenic diets. A 0.01% concentration of the tetrahydropyridinium analog caused increased plaque in rats compared to nonmedicated control animals.

The nickel-catalyzed reaction of benzocyclic quaternary ammonium salts with arylzinc reagents or arylboron reagents affords amino-retentive arylation products in 40%-95% yields. This protocol is suitable for various substituted benzocyclic quaternary ammonium salts and arylzinc or arylboron reagents. The transition-metal-free reaction of benzocyclic quaternary ammonium salts with PhMeSiBpin in the presence of LiOBu leads to amino-retentive silylation products.

α-Terpineol and 1,8-cineole are two important compounds in essential oils. This study developed an efficient method to recover α-terpineol from model oil (MO) based on association extraction by in situ formations of deep eutectic solvent (DES) between α-terpineol and some quaternary ammonium salts (QASs) by hydrogen-bond (HB) interaction. Such interaction could be broken almost completely by the introduction of water, due to the stronger HB interaction between water and QASs, which could release α-terpineol by liquid-liquid separation and save the organic solvents consumption.

The rapid emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria represents a critical global health threat, underscoring the urgent need for alternative antimicrobial strategies beyond conventional antibiotics. In this study, we report the synthesis of novel biobased antimicrobial polymers bearing quaternary ammonium salts, derived from sustainable feedstocks, maleic anhydride, dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, and furfurylamine. The functional tricyclic oxanorbornene lactam monomer is polymerized via ring opening metathesis polymerization, yielding well-defined polymers with controlled molar masses and low dispersity.

Cationic gemini surfactants are used due to their broad spectrum of activity, especially surface, anticorrosive and antimicrobial properties. Mixtures of cationic and anionic surfactants are also increasingly described. In order to investigate the effect of anionic additive on antimicrobial activity, experimental studies were carried out to obtain MIC (minimal inhibitory concentration) against and bacteria.
